The ability to accurately use linguistic and literary terminology. This includes similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeias, juxtaposition, oxymorons, assonance, parenthesis and pathetic fallacy.

Vocabulary
The ability to use and understand a wide range of ambitious vocabulary. This will enable students to analyse how vocabulary contributes to the effectiveness and impact of a text and will enrich creative writing.

Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation
The ability to spell and punctuate accurately, and use grammar correctly. This is achieved by incorporating topics such as silent letters, homophones, the 8 parts of speech, verb tenses, sentence structures and punctuation marks.

Creative & Fictional Writing Skills
The ability to respond to a written prompt or scenario to produce an imaginative and original text with a designated audience, purpose or form. This is achieved by structuring the narrative to create deliberate effects, maintaining a consistent viewpoint, and by using vocabulary, punctuation and grammar techniques to influence the reader.

Creative & Fictional Reading Skills
The ability to critically assess literary fiction to evaluate the impact of a text and how it captures the interest of the reader. This includes analysing the narrative, descriptive and structural techniques used to create different points of views, characters, atmospheres and settings.

Transactional & Non-Fictional Writing Skills
The ability to write effectively for different purposes, audiences and forms including to describe, explain, instruct, advise, argue or inform for texts such as newspaper articles, leaflets, biographies, diaries or letters. This includes emphasising facts, incorporating evidence, creating an emotional impact and using persuasive language through devices such as rhetorical questions.

Transactional & Non-Fictional Reading Skills
The ability to read in different ways for different purposes, make inferences that are justified by evidence and evaluate a writer’s choice of vocabulary, grammar, form and structural features. This also includes comparing the usefulness, relevance and presentation of texts such as newspaper articles, autobiographies, reports or travel writing.
